For the first phase of the study, we collected over 600 student papers and 500 practitioner documents, and used them to investigate the differences between student and practitioner writing. As of April 2015, in the second phase of the study, we had an additional 400 student papers for investigations of the impact of the new teaching materials, and we continue to collect new papers. The texts cover structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, water resource management, and some other environmental aspects of civil engineering projects. The corpus spans 10 different kinds of texts, or "genres," as listed in Table 1. We also have 50 research journal articles to use as academic comparison texts.
